Spiritual Psychosis vs Mental Illness: What’s Really Going On?

meditation-kundalini-energy-spirituality-manifestation-energy-healing

Let’s talk about something that a lot of people experience — but almost no one explains properly.

You know those moments where reality feels a bit… wobbly?
Where your body is buzzing, your mind is racing, and suddenly you’re questioning everything?

Yeah. That space.

In the clinical world, it often gets labelled as psychosis.
But in the world of spirituality, we might call it something very different.

And honestly? I think the truth sits somewhere in between.

🌿 So… what is “spiritual psychosis”?

When people talk about spiritual psychosis vs mental illness, what they’re often trying to describe is this:

A state where your perception expands beyond everyday reality — but your system isn’t fully grounded enough to hold it.

For many people, this shows up during a kundalini awakening, deep healing work, or intense emotional release.

You might:

  • Feel heat moving up your spine
  • Experience involuntary body movements or shaking
  • See colours or energy fields
  • Hear voices or feel presences
  • Have intense emotional releases

And here’s the key thing I see in my work:

👉 There’s often awareness.

A part of you knows:
“Something is happening to me… and it feels spiritual.”

🧠 And what about what we call “mental illness”?

Now this is where it gets a bit more nuanced.

What we traditionally label as disorders (like schizophrenia or severe psychosis) can look similar on the surface — but internally, the experience is often very different.

In those states, people can feel:

  • Completely overwhelmed
  • Disconnected from reality without awareness
  • Unable to ground themselves
  • Stuck in fear-based loops or alternate realities

It’s what I gently describe (not clinically, just human-to-human) as:

👉 being locked in other dimensions without the ability to come back.

💫 My personal experience (and why I see it differently)

I’ll be real with you — I’ve been there.

I’ve had episodes where:

  • My vision distorted
  • Energy moved through my body in waves
  • I heard voices that weren’t physical

And it was… a lot.

But over time, something shifted.

Instead of fearing it, I learned how to:

  • Ground my body
  • Understand what I was sensing
  • Not get swept away by it

And what used to feel like chaos became… clarity.

Now?
It shows up as:

  • Deep intuition
  • Reading people instantly
  • Sensing emotional and energetic states calmly

No fireworks. Just knowing.

🌍 Why I don’t love the word “disorder”

Here’s my honest take:

When we label these experiences purely as mental illness, we can unintentionally create more fear and stigma.

From a trauma and consciousness perspective, a lot of what’s happening is:

👉 The nervous system releasing stored emotion
👉 The body processing ancestral and past experiences
👉 The mind opening to non-ordinary states

That doesn’t mean we ignore safety or support (we don’t).
But it does mean we bring more compassion into the conversation.

⚖️ The real difference (in simple terms)

If I had to explain the difference between psychosis and spiritual awakening, I’d say:

Spiritual psychosis / awakening:

  • There is some level of awareness
  • The person can eventually ground and integrate
  • The experience evolves over time

Locked states (what we call disorders):

  • Little to no awareness
  • Difficulty returning to baseline
  • Ongoing distress and disconnection

And both deserve support — not judgment.

💛 Why this matters (and how I support this work)

This is actually a huge part of what I do in my work as a therapist.

I help people:

  • Make sense of intense inner experiences
  • Regulate their nervous system
  • Integrate spiritual awakening safely
  • Work through trauma without losing themselves in it

If this is something you’re navigating, you’re not “too much” or “broken.”

You’re just in an experience that needs the right kind of support.

We’re entering a time where more people are waking up, feeling more, and processing deeper layers.

So these experiences?
They’re going to become more common — not less.

The goal isn’t to label them quickly.

It’s to understand them… support them… and integrate them safely.
